Transgender Die-In: A Political Display Against Trans Hate Crimes

BGLTSA presents….TRANSCENDENCE: A TRANS ISSUES WEEK

***Wednesday, March 12th from 11am-2pm outside of the Science Center***

Violence against transgender people is a reality. Join us to help combat it.

The BGLTSA will be hosting a political display to make our campus aware that hatecrimes occur daily against transgender people simply because of their gender identity and expression. We will stage a “die-in” with BGLTSA members lying on the ground to commemorate those in our community whose lives have been taken from them for expressing who they are. Information will be displayed about trans hate crimes and House Bill 1722 — a bill currently being considered by the Massachusetts legislature concerning the inclusion of violence fueled by a person’s gender identity and expression under current “hate crime” laws.

COMBAT INJUSTICE. BE BOLD. WE DARE YOU.

Please contact cbrooks@fas.harvard.edu or bperkov@fas.harvard.edu if you would like to be part of the display or if you have any questions.

BGLTSA Presents…TRANSCENDENCE: A TRANS ISSUES WEEK

“The Performance of Gender”: A Talk with Prof. Robin Bernstein

Wednesday, March 12th @ 7pm, SOCH P13

*What does it mean to say that gender is “performed”? Where did this idea come from? And most importantly, how can this idea inform and contribute to current intellectual and political projects?*

Professor Robin Bernstein will introduce foundational concepts in the analysis of gender and performance, followed by the showing and guided discussion of a brief film clip.

This talk is targeted to a general audience — no previous experience with gender/queer theory necessary!

*Free Finale desserts provided!*

Join the BGLTSA, Radcliffe Union of Students, SOCH, and Women’s Week 2008 to discuss gender performativity with WGS/History and Literature professor and author of Cast Out: Queer Lives in Theater, Professor Robin Bernstein.
